Square End Cobalt End Mills
Cobalt square end mills sit between high speed steel and carbide. They run hotter and harder than plain HSS, while staying tougher and less brittle than carbide in interrupted cuts or on less rigid machines. Stocked in 2, 4 and 6 flute fractional sizes, a miniature 2 flute range, and a heavy duty 4 and 6 flute range — uncoated or in TiALN, TiCN and TiN.
Square End vs. Ball End: A square end leaves a flat floor and a sharp internal corner, which is what slotting, pocketing and shouldering call for. For contoured or three-dimensional surfaces, use the cobalt ball end range instead.
Center Cutting vs. Non-Center Cutting: Center cutting tools have edges that meet at the axis, so they can plunge straight into solid material. Non-center cutting tools cannot — they need a pre-drilled hole or a ramped entry. Both 2 flute ranges are center cutting and the heavy duty range is not, while the 4 and 6 flute fractional range is stocked both ways, so check the specification before ordering.
Flute Count: 2 flute tools clear chips best and are the safer choice for slotting and deeper cuts in gummier materials. 4 and 6 flute tools put more cutting edges in the work for a smoother finish and greater rigidity, better suited to profiling and finishing passes.
Miniature and Heavy Duty: The miniature 2 flute range covers small-diameter detail work. The heavy duty range uses a shorter flute length for added rigidity in more aggressive cuts.
