Cobalt Ball End Mills
Cobalt ball end mills carry a fully rounded tip rather than a flat one, so the cutting edge follows a curve instead of leaving a flat floor and a sharp corner. That makes them the tool for 3D contouring, die and mold work, and any surface that is not flat. Stocked in 2 flute and 4 and 6 flute fractional ranges, uncoated or in TiALN, TiCN and TiN.
Ball End vs. Square End: Use a ball end when the finished surface is curved, filleted or three-dimensional. For flat floors, slots and square shoulders, the cobalt square end range is the correct choice.
Flute Count: The 2 flute range clears chips more freely and is the better choice for deeper contour passes and roughing in softer alloys. The 4 and 6 flute range leaves a finer scallop between passes, which suits finishing work and harder materials.
Helix Angle: The 2 flute range is stocked at both 30° and 40° helix — the higher angle shears more gradually for a smoother finish, the lower angle is more rigid under load. The 4 and 6 flute range is 30° throughout.
Why Cobalt: Cobalt holds its edge at higher temperatures than plain high speed steel, so these tools tolerate faster speeds and tougher materials — stainless, titanium and hardened alloys. They remain tougher and less prone to chipping than carbide, which makes them a safer choice in interrupted cuts, older machines, or setups that are not perfectly rigid.
